Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is "malocclusion," which means "bad bite."

The doctors and staff at Pure Pediatric Dentistry are specially trained to help diagnose orthodontic conditions in children. At every 6 month check up, we evaluate your child’s oral development. If our dentist feels your child would benefit from a pediatric orthodontic consultation, we will make the appropriate referral, and help you make an informed decision for your child.

Certain orthodontic conditions are best treated at an early age, whereas others are better treated in the teenage years. This can be confusing to many parents but do not worry, we will make sure you are well informed. We can even speak with you after you see an orthodontist to clarify any questions you might have.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. By the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, an orthodontist can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
